1. How old do you need to be to drive?
To learn to drive you must be 17 years old or 16 years of age if you are disabled and receiving the higher rate a disability living allowance.
2. When can I apply for a provisional driving licence?
You can apply up to three months before your 17th birthday or three months before your 16th birthday if you are disabled. If you are over 17 then you can apply immediately.

4. How many lessons does it take to pass a driving test?
There is no set number of driving lessons you must have before sitting your practical test. However, those who pass their driving test have had, on average, about 45 hours of professional training.
5. How much does the practical driving test cost?
The current fee for a driving test costs £62.00 for a weekday and £75.00 for a Saturday (Fees effective from 5th October 2009).
6. How much does the theory test cost?
The current fee for a theory test costs £31.00 (Fees effective from 5th October 2009).
7. How do I apply for my first full driving licence?
You can apply for your provisional driving licence by completing the D1 application form which is available from the DVLA form ordering service or your local Post Office. You will also need to enclose original documentation confirming your identity, a passport style colour photograph and the fee of £50.00. Send your completed application and payment to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AD or apply online.
8. How much does a provisional driving licence cost?
Your first provisional driving licence will cost you £50.00.
9. How do I book a theory driving test?
First you will need to have a provisional driving licence then you can book by phoning the theory test booking line on 0300 200 1122, alternatively you can book online or by post but you'll need an application form, remember if you book over the phone or online there is no need to fill out an application form. Payment is taken at the time of booking.
10. I have an old-style licence without a photo, can I still use it?
You can still use it, but make sure you take along a valid passport with you on test as proof of identity, if you fail to show the required documents you will not be allowed to take a test and will lose the fee.
11. What is the pass mark for the theory test?
The pass mark is 43 out of 50 for the multiple choice part and 44 out of 75 for the hazard perception part, remember you need to reach the pass mark for both parts at the same time in order to pass your theory test.
12. What if I am dyslexic or have other reading difficulties?
If you are dyslexic or have other reading difficulties you can ask for an English voiceover and request to have up to double time for the multiple choice part of the test.
13. What car do I use for the driving test?
If you learn to drive with a driving instructor you will take your test in the instructor's car, the examiners do not supply a car for the test.
14. Do I need to pass my theory test before I start driving lessons?
No, you can start driving lessons first, your instructor can give you help or advice on both parts of the theory test.
15. I have lost or misplaced the paper counter part of driving licence, what should I do?
You will need to replace it before you can take a test. You can apply by phone if one or both parts of your licence have been lost or stolen and none of your details have changed, the telephone number is 0300 790 6801 and a £20.00 fee applies, alternatively you can replace your driving licence using the DVLA secure online service. The DVLA will aim to send you your new driving licence within 10 working days of you submitting your application. Remember if you have a test booked you will have to either reschedule or cancel it, and providing you give DSA three clear working days notice you will not lose your test fee.
16. I need to change the date or time of my theory test?
You can move your booking to an earlier or later date, if a slot is available online. You'll be able to search for a new test date or change the test centre where you are taking your test. You can only change bookings that are confirmed. You need to give at least three clear working days notice before your test date to avoid losing your test fee.
17. How do I book my practical driving test?
The quickest and easiest way to book your practical driving test is to use the online booking service, you can use the online booking service between 6.00 am and midnight, Monday to Sunday.
